The US roster has been announced for Wednesday’s game against Russia, and as expected there are a few young players getting a chance to show what they can do.
GOALKEEPERS (3): Tim Howard (Everton), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (6): Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Nuremberg), Maurice Edu (Stoke City), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Michael Bradley (Roma), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde), Joe Gyau (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)
FORWARDS (4): Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Herculez Gomez (Santos Laguna)
Josh Gatt is a 21-year-old right winger with a lot of speed and technical ability. He and Mix Diskerud are two of the brightest young players in the US National Team system and will be the main couple to watch of the young guys. Joe Gyau is another to watch: another winger with pace from Tampa, Florida.
Another notable thing about this roster is the inclusion of Jozy Altidore. Hopefully, he got the wakeup call and comes out firing against the Russians. He is currently on form for his club team, AZ Alkmaar and is the 3rd leading scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie. If the US are going to get through the Hex, Altidore can only help them.
The last note to take about the roster is the return of Timmy Chandler. Since it is just a friendly, an appearance does not tie him to the US. But does this signify he might be close to making that commitment?
