ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced another very special guest for the team’s North American Soccer League season opening festivities Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium.
Cuban-American sensation Jon Secada will start the party, singing the national anthem prior to the team kicking off what promises to be an exciting season under the new leadership of principal owner Bill Edwards and General Manager Perry Van Der Beck. The match begins at 7:30 p.m. against FC Edmonton.
Secada has had an active and successful international music career for more than two decades, highlighted by three Grammy Awards and 20 million albums sold. As a singer, Secada enjoyed a No. 5 pop hit with his single “Just Another Day.” His album Otro Dia Mas Sin Verte earned Secada the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. Secada followed that up with the 1995 “Best Latin Pop Performance” Grammy for his album “Amor.” Jon has also starred on Broadway, earning critical acclaim for his work in “Grease,” “Cabaret” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
As a songwriter, Secada has worked with superstars including Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Mandy Moore. Secada co-wrote Estefan’s No. 1 hit anthem “Coming Out of the Dark.”
Secada has also dedicated his life to philanthropic missions, working to improve the lives of others through his non-profit organization, Jon Secada Charities. His causes have included Hispanic-American betterment, children, AIDS research, Hepatitis C awareness and the fight against child abuse. Secada also endowed a music scholarship at the University of Miami.
