Four people were arrested after a violent and weird incident at Sunday’s Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer game at Al Lang Stadium.
According to St. Petersburg police, firefighters were called after a report of a fire in the stands during the game.
Police said the issue began when two bus loads of fans of the visiting team, Orlando City, arrived at the stadium. Police say many of said fans were intoxicated.
Arguments with Rowdies fans followed, which escalated to fights and led to smoke bombs being set off in the stands.
According to police, one Orlando fan hit an officer in the stomach with a team flag, and another fan faces battery charges after he shoved a police officer to join a fight, authorities said.
Two other visiting fans also were arrested.
According to Rowdies’ owner Bill Edwards, extra security personnel were on hand Sunday because Orlando fans have caused problems in the past.
Edwards said his team won’t play Orlando again until the fan base can behave better.
