CHICAGO (AP) — Defenders DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco have been barred from playing for the U.S. national team by their Mexican club when the Americans face Mexico on Wednesday.
Puebla refused to release the two players and U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said he will not replace them on the roster for the exhibition game at Glendale, Ariz. The game does not fall on an international calendar date, allowing Puebla to withhold the players.
Klinsmann says the U.S. team is “very disappointed in the decision by Puebla. When the match was scheduled, it was with the spirit that both teams would have access to their domestic-based players for what is a very important game for those competing for spots in the World Cup.”
The American and Mexican teams have qualified for the World Cup, which begins in June in Brazil.
