Should The NBA Change The Playoff Format

The question shouldn’t be IF the NBA should change the Playoff format but WHEN!

If the NBA season ended today five of the eight Eastern Conference teams would be under .500 while the West has 10 teams above .500 leaving two out of the title race.

Current playoff format: Proposed “Best Teams format”:
East Pool 1
#1 Pacers (18-2) vs #8 Bulls (8-10) #1 Pacers (18-2) vs #8 Timberwolves (9-11)
#2 Heat (15-5) vs #7 Bobcats (9-11) #2 Spurs (15-4) vs #7 Grizzles (9-10)
#3 Hawks (11-10) vs #6 Wizards (9-10) #3 Heat (15-5) vs #6 Suns (11-9)
#4 Celtics (10-12) vs #5 Pistons (10-10) #4 Rockets (14-7) vs #5 Warriors (12-9)

West Pool 2
#1 Blazers (17-4) vs #8 Warriors (12-9) #1 Blazers (17-4) vs #8 Pelicans (9-10)
#2 Spurs (15-4) vs #7 Nuggets (12-8) #2 Thunder (14-4) vs #7 Wizards (9-10)
#3 Thunder (14-4) vs #6 Mavs (13-8) #3 Clippers (13-8) vs #6 Lakers (10-9)
#4 Clippers (13-8) vs #5 Rockets (14-7) #4 Mavs (13-8) vs #5 Nuggets (12-8)

While its a long shot for this to happen, its certainly something the NBA needs to consider before the lack of competition hurts their brand. Fans want to see the best product on the floor. The new format would allow more balance in post-season competition, not allowing the East best to walk into the Finals while the Western Conference beat each other down. And if your argument is traveling for east vs west match ups, considering they do that for 82 games its not a stretch.
