Sean Rodriguez Admits To Being Overly Aggressive On Bases
Joe Maddon said it happens sometimes in baseball. He said Sean Rodriguez is normally a good aggressive base runner and Jason Bourgeois is a really good bunter. He simply chose to call it a non-fun moment in baseball.
The it that he is referring to is a botched squeeze play that occurred in the bottom of the 7th. The Blue Jays had just tied the score at 1-1 on a Edwin Encarnacion solo homer but the Rays looked to be mounting a threat in the bottom of the inning.
James Loney led off with a single and Sean Rodriguezentered the game as a pinch runner. With Yunel Escobar at the plate Joe Maddon put on the hit and run and Escobar lined a single into center field to put runners at 1st and 3rd with nobody out.
Bourgeois appeared to have a good pitch to bunt but he was unable to make contact. J.P. Arencibia pumped a throw to 2nd base and Rodriguez took an extra step toward home plate. Arencibia threw down to 3rd base and Rodriguez was caught in a run down. The Rays were unable to push across the go-ahead run and the inning ending with a Jose Lobaton strike out. Luckily,Jose Lobaton bailed out Rodriguez with his walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning and everyone went home happy.
After the game Sean Rodriguez took the blame for getting caught off 3rd base and was appreciative towards Jose Lobaton for bailing him out with his 10th inning walk off home run.
I got a little overly aggressive . It's a tough play considering when the guy bunts through it...but that's just me being too aggressive and trying to make something out of nothing with no outs.I do have the tendency to be an aggressive base runner but I got to know when to either at least tone it down a little bit or just hold back.
With no outs that's the best time to basically just chill out but I messed up I was too aggressive but Loby (Lobaton) picked me up - that's huge, I don't have to leave the clubhouse with a little bit of frustration I can leave it with a smile.
