Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano joined NFL Total Access for a rare in-studio appearance Monday night.

Dressed in a light chambray button-down shirt and khakis, he chatted about his first season as head coach of the Buccaneers, filling the leadership void left by Ronde Barber’s retirement, his star cornerback Darrelle Revis’ knee rehab, his quarterback situation, and a number of other topics.

He told Andrew Siciliano and Shaun O’Hara the biggest lesson he learned as a first-year NFL head coach was that he couldn’t employ a ‘one size fits all’ strategy when dealing with a roster that had vast differences in age.

“You have 21-year-old rookies who really aren’t — they’re not fully-developed; they’re not even close to being fully-developed. Then you have a 37-year-old guy like Ronde [Barber] who really, you better just get him to game day and let him go do his thing, and make sure he has all the mental stuff down.”

He acknowledged the leadership void left by Barber’s retirement and described him as the “consummate pro,” saying he was helpful in his transition in taking over at One Buc.

“As a first time head coach in the NFL, he gave me a lot of great feedback.”

When asked if Darrelle Revis would be ready, presumably for the regular season, Schiano responded, “That’s what we’re banking on.”

“He looks good in his rehab. I’ll tell you what. When you talk about a pro, this guy has approached his rehab like no one I have ever seen. Works incredibly hard, focused, if I’m a betting man, he’s gonna be ready.”

But can he be the Revis he was before the ACL injury? Schiano thinks so.

“We’re saying ‘yes’ and he’s saying ‘yes.’ And I fully believe that. I can’t wait because he lets you do a lot of things defensively that otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do.”

When the Buccaneers’ quarterback situation came up, Schiano was quick dismiss any controversy, even when challenged by his own previous statements about creating the need for competition.

“I believe in competition, I do. And Mike Glennon is going to be a tremendous quarterback in his time. But we have a quarterback. It’s Josh Freeman. He had a real good spring, I mean a really good spring. I think it’s really coming together.”

“Being in this system for the second year now, and hearing the things over again after being able to study it, I’m really encouraged. I know Mike Sullivan, our offensive coordinator — he does a great job — he’s encouraged. We’re looking forward to big things. Josh is going to have a big year.”
