Say What!? Logan Forsythe Batting Third For Rays?

Forsythe Batting Third, Guyer Gets A Start, Boxberger Recalled

The Tampa Bay Rays (7-6) open their final series of their 9-game/10-day road trip in Baltimore against the Orioles. Chris Archer (1-0, 1.38 ERA) takes the mound for the Rays against Wei-Yin Chen (1-1, 6.75 ERA) for the O’s. The Rays look to continue the success they had against the Orioles in 2013 when they took 13 out of the 19 matchups. The Rays did make a roster move prior to the game sending Jeff Beliveau to Triple-A Durham and calling up right handed reliever Brad Boxberger.

Chen made three starts against the Rays last year (17 innings) and posted a 1-0 record with a 3.18 ERA but the Rays did post an impressive slash line of .306/.353/.484 against hiim.

Archer faced the Orioles twice (11.1 innings) and posted a 1-0 record with a 3.97 ERA but held the O’s to .175/.267/.350 slash line.

The Rays have been held to 3 runs or less in eight of their 13 games thus far this season and in six of their last seven. Joe Maddon has often put guys in spots they have never been in a lineup before and that will happen again tonight as he has inserted Logan Forsythe in the three spot in the lineup. It will mark the first time in his 175 game major league career that he has been penciled 3rd in a lineup.

The main reason for slotting in the third position is his success versus left handed pitching in his career posting a triple slash line of .286/.356/.423 spanning 262 plate appearances.

The rest of the Rays lineup:

Ben Zobrist (2b), Desmond Jennings (CF), Logan Forsythe (DH), Evan Longoria (3b), Wil Myers (RF), James Loney (1b), Brandon Guyer (LF), Yunel Escobar (SS), and Ryan Hanigan (C)

The lineup also sees a starting assignment for Brandon Guyer who hit a home run in his first major league plate appearance at Camden Yards on May 6, 2011 against O’s lefty Zach Britton.
