With the 4th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
How Sports Talk Florida sees the pick…
An electrifying play-maker with 4.43 speed and exceptional kick return ability, Watkins can line up virtually anywhere on the field and will make an immediate impact at the next level.
A native of Fort Myers, he went from being Lee County’s all-time leading receiver in high school to becoming Clemson’s all-time leader in receptions, receptions per game, receiving yards, receiving yards per game and most 100-yard receiving games (15).
In his three seasons at Clemson, he compiled 5,129 all-purpose yards, with 3,391 receiving yards and 1,376 yards on kick and punt returns.
Watkins burst onto the college football scene as a true freshman, starting 10 games and accumulating 2,288 all-purpose yards, including 1,219 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
A rocky sophomore season followed. He was arrested on misdemeanor drug charges for possession of marijuana, as well as two ADHD drugs — Adderall and Vyvanse. He finished the year with 57 receptions for 708 yards and three touchdowns.
Determined to help their son get back on track, Watkins’ mother Nicole McMiller and stepfather James moved the family from Fort Myers to Clemson, and it paid off. Watkins rebounded in his junior season with 1,464 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
In the final game of his college career, Watkins went out with a bang, setting an Orange Bowl record with 227 receiving yards and two touchdowns against Ohio State.
