Saints Sign Benjamin Watson, Ramon Humber
The New Orleans Saints announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent tight end Benjamin Watson to a three-year contract and agreed to terms on a one-year contract with linebacker Ramon Humber. The announcement was made by Saints’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.
Watson, 6-3, 255, comes to New Orleans from the Cleveland Browns, with whom he appeared in 45 games with 41 starts from 2010-12. Originally a first round draft choice (32nd overall) of the New England Patriots in 2004, Watson has career totals in nine NFL seasons of 116 appearances with 88 starts and 321 receptions for 3,776 yards (11.8 avg.) with 28 touchdowns.
In 2012, Watson appeared in all 16 games for the Browns with 14 starts and recorded 49 receptions for 501 yards and three touchdowns, posting at least one reception in every contest. His reception total was ranked fourth on the Browns, while he ranked third in both receiving touchdowns and yardage. His catch total was tied for the second-highest total of his career.
Watson came into the NFL from the University of Georgia, where he spent his final three seasons after beginning his college career at Duke University in 1999. Posting career college totals of 73 receptions for 945 yards (12.9 avg.) and seven touchdowns, the finance major recorded 23 receptions for 324 yards and two touchdowns as a senior for the Bulldogs.
Humber, 5-11, 232, joined the Saints in 2010 and has been an asset on both special teams and as a part of the club’s linebacker rotation. First signed as an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State by the Indianapolis Colts in 2009, Humber has appeared in 47 career games with five starts and has posted career totals of 47 tackles (25 solo), one sack, one pass defense and one forced fumble. On special teams, Humber has recorded 43 career stops.
In 2012, Humber appeared in 13 games, seeing action primarily on special teams and finished tied for second on the team with 14 tackles, his highest single-season total as a Saint. He recorded a career-high four special teams tackles vs. the San Diego Chargers on October 7.
