Rowdies Captain Frankie Sanfilippo Returns for 2014 Season
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (January 3, 2014) -- The Rowdies announced on Friday that the club has re-signed Captain Frankie Sanfilippo and midfielder Shane Hill. Sanfilippo signed a two-year contract with the second year being a club option. Hill has been signed to a three-year contract with both years two and three being club options.
Sanfilippo (5-10, 165) has been the captain of the Rowdies since his first season at the club in 2011. In 2013, he captained the team in 25 matches, where he had two assists. Sanfilippo has been a key leader since his arrival to the club and his 2013 performances led him to be named to the NASL Team of the Week on five occasions.
?We are building a team of leaders,? said club owner Bill Edwards. ?I am very pleased Frankie will be returning to his role as captain in 2014. His experience on and off the field will be invaluable.?
Sanfilippo was instrumental in leading the Rowdies to the 2012 NASL Soccer Bowl Final, where the club would be proclaimed champions after a nerve-racking series of penalty kicks. Since his arrival in 2011, Sanfilippo has played in 25 or more matches every season.
Sanfilippo began his soccer career at San Jose State and was then drafted 56th overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes but chose to stay and finish his degree in Sociology. In 2005, Frankie signed with Rochester Rhinos and was named to the USL All-Star Team in 2006, recording over 2,000 minutes played. In 2007, Frankie moved to the Carolina RailHawks, where he played as team captain until his move to the Charleston Battery in 2009. Sanfilippo returned to the Rhinos for the 2010 season.
Also returning to the club for the 2014 NASL Season will be midfielder Shane Hill. The midfielder previously played for Sheffield United before joining the club as a trialist during the 2011 preseason. During the 2013 season, Hill started in 18 games while netting two goals. Similar to Sanfilippo, Hill?s breakout season was in 2012, where he played in 22 regular season matches and four post-season games.
