Rodney Loses Control And Red Sox Rally In 9th, Defeat Rays 4-3
These are the games that sting. These are the games that a team will look back on at the end of the year and wonder what if. To have two of these games against division rivals in the same 10 day period - brutal.
The Rays 10-game home stands ends the way it began with Fernando Rodney getting to within 1 strike of a Rays victory and giving up the go ahead runs. Last Monday with two outs the?villain?was J.P. Arencibia who was down to his last strike before?depositing?a ?Rodney fastball into the seats to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 8-7 victory.
Tonight Rodney could not locate his fastball and worked himself into a jam by walking the bases loaded. With 2-out he had Will Middlebrooks down to his last strike but he sent a line drive double by left fielder Matt Joyce to clear the bases and give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.
Fernando Rodney (1-2, 5.28 ERA) worked 0.2 innings allowing 3R/ER on 1 hit while walking three. With the loss the Rays record falls back to .500 at 20-20 on the season. Junichi Tawzawa (3-2, 2.95 ERA) worked the final two innings for the Red Sox to earn the victory and the Red Sox record improves to 24-17 .
Alex Cobb gave the Rays the type of start they needed working 6.1 innings allowing just 1R/ER on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. Jake McGee got the final two outs in the 7th and Joel Peralta worked a perfect eighth inning to hand the ball over to Fernando Rodney. Rodney only recorded two outs in the eighth before being lifted for Alex Torres to record the last out.
Felix Doubront started for the Red Sox and worked the 5+ innings allowing 2R/ER on 3 hits striking out 7 and walking 6. He was relieved by Clayton Mortensen who allowed 1R/ER on 1 hit and 2 walks. Andrew Miller worked 0.2 scoreless innings, ?Craig Breslow worked a scoreless inning, and Tawzawa the final two frames.
The Rays jumped ahead 1-0 on a Ryan Roberts home run in the bottom of the 2nd.
The Rays depart tonight for Baltimore for a weekend series with the Orioles.
