Rodney Implodes, Rays Suffer Crushing 7-6 Loss
The Tampa Bay Rays fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers by a final score of 7-6 in what can only be described as a crushing defeat. The Rays had a 6-0 lead and a 6-1 lead after 7 innings. Fernando Rodney couldn't hold a 3 run lead in the 9th and the Rays lost an opportunity to gain a full game on the Boston Red Sox. Joe Maddon says it best in a post-game tweet:
We will throw this one in the wastebasket as soon as possible and come back ready to play tomorrow.

David Price did his part working 7 innings allowing just 1 unearned run on 7 hits striking out 4 and walking 1. ?He recorded 13 outs on ground balls to go along with his 4 strikeouts.
The only run against him was unearned and came in the bottom of the 7th. After issuing a leadoff walk to Jerry Haristion Jr. he got a ground ball to Evan Longoria who threw wildly past Ryan Roberts at second for the Rays first error in 10 games. He came within an out of getting out of the jam after getting?Tim Federowicz to ground into a double play but Skip Schumaker delivered the 2-out RBI double.
Tonight was his 8th start since coming off the disabled list and has posted a 6-1 record with a 1.40 ERA (10 ER/64.1 IP). ?He has allowed 45 hits, struck out 44, and only issued 2 walks.
Unfortunately for Price the bullpen was unable to hold the lead allowing 2-runs to score in the 8th and Fernando Rodney allowed 4 runs to score in the bottom of the 9th giving the Dodgers a 7-6 victory.
Fernando Rodney (4-3, 4.24 ERA) came in to work the 9th inning and allowed a leadoff single to Skip Schumaker who came around to score on a triple past a diving Ben Zobrist off the bat of Mark Ellis. ?Nick Punto followed with a double to score Ellis and cut the Rays lead to 6-5 then Adrian Gonzalez doubled to score Punto and just like that the game was tied at ?6-6.
After walking Yasiel Puig Rodney got a double play ball hit back to him but his throw to second sailed into center field and Adrian Gonzalez raced around to score the winning run.
Chris Capuano? was done in by sub-par defense behind him. Despite only one error being charged there were several balls hit into the outfield that should have been caught. He worked 4.1 innings and was charged with 6R/5ER on 10 hits striking out 3 and walking 1.
The Dodgers bullpen (J.P. Howell, Brandon League, Carlos Marmol, and Ronald Belisario) held the Rays scoreless over the final 4.2 innings of work allowing just 2 hits walking 3 and striking out 3. Ronald Belisario (5-6, 3.33 ERA) picked up the victory and it was well earned as he came in with runners at 1st and 2nd and nobody out in the top of the 9th and kept the Rays off the board.
David Price Walks A Batter:
Since coming off the disabled list Price had walked just 1 batter (Mark DeRosa on July 19th at Toronto). ?Tonight he walked Jerry Hairston Jr. to lead off the 7th inning ending his club record stretch of 35.1 innings without a walk. He broke his own team record of 27 innings set from July 2, 2013 through July 19, 2013.
Players Facing Former Team:
James Loney returned to Los Angeles where he spent his first 6.5 years of his career and went 3 for 4 to improve his season average to .312. ?He delivered a 2-RBI single to give the Rays an early 2-0 lead.
J.P. Howell worked 2/3 scoreless innings against his former team to lower his ERA to 2.08.
Carl Crawford came in to pinch hit with runners at 1st and 3rd and 2-out trailing 6-3 to face.Joel Peralta who he was 3 out of 4 against lifetime. ?Peralta retired him on a pop out to shortstop on the first pitch.
Puig Vs Myers:
Wil Myers went 2 for 4 with a a walk (intentional) to improve his slash line to .340/.392/.531 ?. He also played a flawless center field which included a nice diving catch.
Yasiel Puig went 2 for 4 with a RBI double and a walk raising his slash line to .379/.440/.603 . Defensively he had communication problems and allowed two balls to fall in that should have been caught. Additionally, he made an ill advised throw to the plate that allowed a runner to advance an extra base.
Gabe Kapler Tweets About Price:
Guess who's pounding the strike zone more than any other MLB pitcher over the last 4 weeks? It's David Price at a 72.6% clip. #EyesConfirm
