The Colorado Rockies acquired oft-injured left handed starter Brett Anderson [1] (and cash) from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for once promising lefty Drew Pomeranz [2] and right handed pitching prospect Chris Jensen [3].

Athletics_Brett_Anderson_2012 [4]After making 3o starts as a rookie in 2009 (11-11, 4.06 ERA) Anderson has battled injury in each of the last four seasons. In 2010 he was limited to 19 starts while battling a strained elbow which eventually led to Tommy John surgery after just 13 starts in 2011.

His recovery lasted into 2012 and after returning to the mound suffered an oblique strain cutting  his season to just six starts. In 2013 he suffered ankle and foot injuries which shelved him through much of the year appearing in 15 games (five starts).

In the four seasons since his rookie year he has been limited to 54 games (43 starts) and posted a record of 15-18 with a 4.06 ERA. In early April of 2010 the Oakland A’s signed him to a contract extension that included club options for 2014 and 2015. He is owed $8M in 2014 and $12M in 2015 (with a $1.5M club buyout).

Drew Pomeranz was the Indians first round draft pick (fifth overall) in the 2010 draft and prior to the 2012 season was ranked #21 on Baseball America’s Top 10o prospect list. The Indians sent him along with Alex White [5] and Matt McBride [6] to the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline in 2011 for Ubaldo Jimenez [7].

Pomeranz has struggled with the Rockies posting a record of 4-14 with a 5.20 ERA. He has a strikeout rate of 7.6 K/9 and a walk rate of 4.6 BB/9. He has shown the ability to strike hitters out at the Triple A level with a rate of 9.7 K/9 and a walk rate of 3.6 BB/9.

Chris Jensen was drafted by the Rockies in the 6th round of the 2011 draft and spent the 2013 season with their High-A affiliate Modesto Nuts making 28 starts and posting a record of 5-8 with a 4.55 ERA.
