Revis Tips Off Bucs on Jets’ Tendencies

There are no secrets in the NFL, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis, who spent six seasons playing for Sunday’s opponent, the New York Jets, sees nothing wrong with revealing them to his new team as part of its advance scouting.
Rex Ryan’s Jets have one of the most intricate defenses in the NFL. Helping the Bucs offense understand protection calls in anticipation for some of Ryan’s exotic blitz packages is a huge advantage.
“He’s been tremendous,” said offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan. “Certainly being in that system, we’d be foolish not to pick his brain and say, ‘You know what, looking at this tape, what do you think is going on here? What do you think is going on there?'”
On offense, the Jets do have a new coordinator in Marty Mornhinweg, who brought his West Coast system to New York this offseason, and they have a new quarterback in rookie Geno Smith. Revis said he still has plenty of insight on the tendencies of the Jets’ wideouts, and the way personnel are used.
There’s Stephen Hill, their deep threat, and Jeremy Kerley, a former college quarterback whom the Jets like to use on gadget plays, or trick plays.
“I know these guys, I played against them every day in practice,” said Revis. “I’ve got a bunch of tips on those guys; and the good thing about it — I’ve been sharing them with our secondary.”
He said he’s given second-year cornerback Leonard Johnson, who is expected to start opposite him all kinds of pointers, along with rookie Johnthan Banks, All-Pro free safety Dashon Goldson and second-year strong safety Mark Barron.
“I think we will come into this game really comfortable. We really will, just from the experience I had there and knowing these guys.”
While Revis’ new coaches and teammates are certainly glad to have his insight, some said they are still getting accustomed to having such a dominating presence on the field in practice.
“We were watching him on the sidelines (in practice) when the defense got up. It was good seeing him, like some of his breaks, and some of his jams and to see how good he really is,” said wide receiver Mike Williams.
Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said Revis’ leadership and intensity have made a noticeable difference with the team, even though he has only been practicing full-out for a few weeks while recovering from his knee injury.
“He’s a very dominating corner,” said McCoy. “He is Revis Island. He definitely can bring that with just his leadership ability and just his intensity on the field.”Revis Tips Off Bucs on Jets' Tendencies by Jenna Laine
