After all the work it took last season to relocate Revis Island to Tampa Bay, who would have thought it would come to this?

After attempting to restructure a six-year $96 million contract, the Bucs will release All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis if no trade partner emerges in the next two days, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter Monday night [2].

The Bucs traded away last year’s first round pick for Revis, and a conditional draft choice for 2014. That choice becomes a third-round draft pick if Revis is on the team’s roster at 4:01 p.m. Wednesday. Otherwise it’s a fourth-round pick.

Revis is also scheduled to earn a $1.5 million roster bonus Wednesday, so the team must act quickly.

Even if the Bucs are unable to find a trade partner, releasing him would instantly free up $16 million in cap space — more than enough to sign a player like Charles Tillman, who has a close relationship with head coach Lovie Smith from their days together in Chicago.
