Report: As Of Now, Avalanche Would Select MacKinnon
The intrigue of who the Colorado Avalanche will select with the top overall draft pick Sunday is starting to grow with less than a week to go before the NHL entry draft gets underway.
Last week, Avalanche executive Joe Sakic said the team would prefer to select a forward over defenseman Seth Jones, who many had assumed for months would be the top overall pick. Yesterday, head coach Patrick Roy said the team would select Halifax forward Nathan MacKinnon if the draft were being held at that moment in a report.
The whole story of what the Avalanche’s plans are with the top pick has been fascinating. It is extremely rare to see a team go into this type of detail concerning their draft plans, leading some to believe this is a smoke screen and Jones will be the eventual top pick.
For Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning, they are in a terrific spot regardless of what the Avalanche does. If the Avalanche were to select MacKinnon, there is at least an outside chance that Jones could fall to three, and one would have to imagine it would be tough for Yzerman to pass on him at that point.
There is also the possibility that the Avalanche could move the pick, which would change everything in terms of how the top of the draft would look. Whatever happens with the top pick, this next week leading up to the draft should be fascinating.Report: As Of Now, Avalanche Would Select MacKinnon by Mike Corcoran
