Blue Jays Pound Three Home Runs And 16 Hits In 10-5 Victory
It’s not often that the Tampa Bay Rays fall behind by three runs and use the long ball to come right back and tie the game but that’s exactly what happened against the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday.
Bedard was unable to keep the Jays at bay and was burned on the long fly in the bottom of the fourth giving up back to back solo homers to Dioner Navarro and Steven Tolleson and then later Melky Cabrera delivered an RBI single to put the Jays up 5-2.
In the span of three batters in the top of the fifth inning the Rays came storming back to tie the game at 5-5. Matt Joyce doubled with one out and came around to score on Desmond Jennings home run and James Loney followed Jennings with a solo homer to tie the game.
He allowed a leadoff double to Edwin Encarnacion who came in to score the go-ahead run on a Brett Lawrie double. Dioner Navarro followed with a RBI single to give Jays a 7-5 lead and knock Erik Bedard out of the game.
Alex Colome fresh off his 50-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs and called up to replace the injured Brandon Guyer (fractured thumb) came in from the bullpen and walked the first batter he faced. After retiring Kevin Pillar he made a mental error on an infield groundball off the bat of the speedy Anthony Gose . James Loney fielded the ball but Colome was late covering the bag and the Jays had the bases loaded and only one out.
The failure to record the out at first cost Colome as he walked Jose Reyes to plate the Jays eighth run and Melky Cabrera delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 9-5 Jays.
Edwin Encarnacion has been on fire in the month of May and continued his torrid hitting by putting an exclamation on the Jays assault of Rays pitching by blasting a solo homer to lead of the Jays half of the sixth. It was his 19th homer on the season and 15th in the month of May.
Erik Bedard (2-3, 4.10 ERA) took the loss as the Rays saw their modest four game win streak halted. More importantly they may have lost catcher Ryan Hanigan who has been dealing with a tight hamstring for the past week as he had to leave the game because of discomfort.
