Rays Wil Myers AL Rookie of the Year
It was a good day for Rays rookie outfielder Wil Myers who was named the 2013 American League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writer’s of America. Not bad for someone who did not get to the big leagues until June 18th. It not take him long to make an impact on the team and help Tampa Bay return to the postseason. His teammate pitcher Chris Archer finished 3rd overall in the voting.
Myers took 23 of 30 first-place votes. The other two finalists were shortstop Jose Iglesias of the Tigers and Myers’s teammate, right-hander Chris Archer. Iglesias finished second overall, and Archer placed third.
Myers numbers were quite strong: .293/.354/.478 with an OPS+ of 132. The 22-year-old Myers, who was acquired from the Royalslast offseason in a deal that featured right-hander James Shields, also tallied 13 homers and 23 doubles in 88 games.
Myers is a third Ray to win the award, as he joins Jeremy Hellickson in 2011 and Evan Longoria in 2008.Rays Wil Myers AL Rookie of the Year by James Williams
