Rays Top Prospect Taylor Guerrieri Suspended 50 Games

Taylor Guerrieri  the Rays #1 pitching prospect, has been suspended for 50 games for violating baseball’s drug policy. It is his second failed test and the substance is believed to be  marijuana.

Guerrieri missed most of the 2013 season after suffering an elbow injury and undergoing Tommy John (elbow reconstruction) surgery on July 24th. He will be allowed to serve the suspension while he is rehabbing from the surgery and will not miss additional time.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times covers the character issues surrounding Guerrieri saying:

There were charecter issues surrounding Guerrieri at the time the Rays drafted him, with questions tied to his decision to change high schools during his senior year. Guerrieri explained after the draft that it was an “alcohol-related incident” that led to him switching high schools during his senior year – drinking one beer before a school football game. “It was a mistake. I learned from it. I regret that it happened. It won’t happen again,” he said at the time. – Tampa Bay Times
