Rays To Miss King Felix

Felix Hernandez [1] was removed from his start against the Kansas City Royals on Monday after allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk in 6.2 innings due to a back cramp.

Mariners_Felix_Hernandez [2]After experience some soreness after the start Monday the Mariners pushed Hernandez’s start against the Tampa Bay Rays from Saturday to Sunday to give him an extra day of rest.

Today, Mariners manager Eric Wedge [3] said that Hernandez will have his start skipped and is now scheduled to pitch Wednesday against the Houston Astros. Eric Wedge had this to say about Hernandez’s back:

“He feels good and wants to start on Sunday, but we’re going to be cautious with him, We want him to get some flat ground work, get another bullpen in. He understands. It’s really not going to affect how many starts he gets.” – mlb.com [4]

It’s good news for the Rays as Hernandez holds a lifetime 4-2 record with a 2.04 ERA against them. His most recent victory against them came on August 15th of last season when he threw a perfect game striking out 12 hitters.

Forgetting about lifetime numbers and achievement its always good not to face Felix Hernandez in a series. Replacing him will be Erasmo Ramirez [5] (5-1, 5.07 ERA) who faced the Rays back on August 13th and allowed 4R/ER on 7 hits in 5.1 innings and took the win in a Mariners 5-4 victory.
