Rays Spring Training Day 7: David Price
DAY SEVEN—All 66 players have reported to camp and participated in this morning’s workout, which was abbreviated due to the Rays Charity Golf Tournament this afternoon…the workout featured the first live BP of the spring, with LH David Price, RH Fernando Rodney, RH Roberto Hernandez, RH Kyle Farnsworth and RH Jeff Niemann among those who threw to hitters.
- RH Joel Peralta (neck stiffness) threw his first bullpen of the spring.
Manager Joe Maddon
On Wil Myers tracking pitches (and not swinging) during live BP: “That’s the first time I’ve seen him not hit, and it was really interesting.”
On seeing Enny Romero pitch in person: “He’s got a great arm, a great pitcher’s body. … That’s what’s been going on the last couple of years I’ve heard about him. I had a chance to speak with him in our meeting. Seems to be … on the serious side. I don’t know if that’s just from not being comfortable with the culture and the language, I’m not sure. He’s all business when he’s out there, and I like it. This guy is motivated. It’s definitely high-end stuff, it’s really interesting.”
On Jeff Niemann’s work today: “I thought Jeff Niemann threw the ball really well. I thought he looked really sharp, free and easy. Threw the ball where he wanted too, looked really good. He stood out today.”
Left-handed pitcher David Price
On the weather and first live BP: “The weather is cold. It is cold here in South Florida right now. But that’s the best I’ve felt all spring. It’s funny how that stuff goes. My body feels better today than it has the previous five or six days, however long we’ve been here. It’s all a work in progress, but I threw strikes today, I felt good, I hit the mitt. I have no complaints after today. Everything I was trying to do I was able to accomplish on the mound with Jose [Molina] back there behind the plate. Got a lot of good feedback from the hitters, and it was a good day.”
On whether he has compassion for hitters in 40-degree weather: “Not one bit. They can get in the cages, they can have a friend throw to them before they come here, so I don’t feel for them one bit. This is the first time we’ve seen hitters up at the plate. Some guys are up there gangster-hacking and some guys want to get mad at us for throwing inside. It is a little cold, and hopefully it can warm back up for the guys that are throwing tomorrow but I don’t mind pitching in the cold. … It’s good to get those guys in the box because it re-adjusts our sights, you can’t be all over the place, we have to define our craft a little bit.”
