TORRES ADDED TO VENEZUELA ROSTER—LH Alex Torres has been added to Venezuela’s roster for the World Baseball Classic…he is one of seven Rays expected to participate in the WBC, joining INF/OF Ben Zobrist (United States), RH Fernando Rodney (Dominican Republic), LH Cesar Ramos (Mexico), C Jose Molina (Puerto Rico) and minor league infielders Leonardo Reginatto and Iago Januario (Brazil)…Brazil is making its first-ever trip to the WBC.
DAY 10—Today’s full-squad workout featured live BP…among those who threw to hitters were RH Jeremy Hellickson, LH Jake McGee, RH Alex Cobb, LH Matt Moore, Jake Odorizzi and RH Chris Archer.
Manager Joe Maddon
On Coach Snell’s visit to camp: “Coach Snell came down to visit today. We had him actively involved; he actually addressed the team, did a great job with that. This guy, back in the day and still is, the energy coach. Always had something going on, something on the bulletin board for us to read. Also, the 6-1 Lafayette Leopard baby babies, at that time, when freshmen were not eligible to play varsity at that time, but the best team in the history of freshman football at Lafayette College.”
On today’s workout: “It looked good. … the energy’s been fantastic. We’re getting our program out there. We just had a great discussion with the position players regarding some situational components with our offense. I like the pace of this whole thing, I like the inventiveness, I like the energy.”
On why the team declined to play an intrasquad game: “Because we’re so looking forward to the split-squad on the first game of spring training. I really love the idea of playing two games on the very first day of spring training. It’s really a helluva an idea. With that, we decided to bang the intrasquad game before that.”
On Tim Beckham: “Tim Beckham, to me, has a really high ceiling as a major league player. … He can play either second base or shortstop well. He’s got a fine arm, he moves great. Offensively, that’s the part that has to come on a more consistent basis. We’re just talking about some things to simplify his swing a bit. This guy’s got the charisma and aptitude to be a major league baseball player. … I see him playing a very high end for a very long time. … As he continues to make some minor [offensive] adjustments, you’re going to see the ball coming off the bat more consistently hard.”
“Joe Maddon was the original Doug Flutie. One of the greatest freshman quarterbacks in the history of Lafayette College, and Lafayette played football back in 1869, they invented it. Joe Maddon is an outstanding person and an outstanding manager, and Tampa Bay is lucky to have him.”
