Rays Select Shortstop Riley Unroe With Pick #60
“The Draft is everything for us” – That’s how important Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman feels about the Major League draft that kicks off this evening.
With the 21st pick in the draft the Rays selected catcher Nick Ciuffo from Lexington High School in South Carolina. He is on Twitter @nciuffo14.
With the 29th pick received as compensation for losing B.J. Upton to free agency the Rays selected Ryne Stanek a hard throwing right handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas. He is on Twitter @rstanek_55.
With their second round pick (#60 overall) the Rays selected high school shortstop Riley Unroe from Desert Ridge High School in Arizona. He is committed to attend University of Southern California.
MLB.com (#92 rank):
The son of former big leaguer Tim Unroe, Riley is a well-rounded shortstop from the Arizona high school ranks. A switch-hitter with good bat speed from both sides of the plate, Unroe has come on strong with his bat during his Draft year. Combining that with his above-average to plus speed makes him an intriguing offensive prospect.
