Rays Rested Bats Pound Indians Pitching, Rays Win 11-3

The Rays pounded out 13 hits against the Cleveland Indians pitchers en route to a series winning 11-3 victory. The win improves the Rays to 4-1 on the current road trip and to 31-25 on the season and drops the Indians to 30-26 on the year.

[1]Jeremy Hellickson [2] (3-2, 5.59 ERA) earned the victory and worked the first 5 innings allowing 3R/ER on 9 hits striking out 4 and walking none. Zach McAllister [3] (4-5, 3.43 ERA) took the loss working 4.1 innings allowing 5R/3ER on 7 hits striking out 4 and walking 4.

The Rays bullpen worked the final 4 innings of scoreless baseball allowing the Indians 2 hits, striking out 2 and walking none. Overall in the series the Rays bullpen worked 16 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits, 15 strike outs, and 4 walks. Today Kyle Farnsworth [4], Joel Peralta [5], Jake McGee [6], and Fernando Rodney [7] all worked perfect innings.

Jake McGee has not been scored upon in his last 10 appearances totaling 9.1 innings of work. In that time he has allowed only 2 hits striking out 10 and walking just 2. Fernando Rodney is showing signs of life as in his last 5 appearances has worked 4.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit striking out 3 and walking 1.

The only Indians pitcher to escape the Rays offense on the afternoon was Bryan Shaw [8] who worked a scoreless 7th inning. The offense pushed across 11 runs on 14 hits. Matt Joyce, Evan Longoria [9], Jose Lobaton [10], and Yunel Escobar [11] all had multi-hit games led by Yunel Escobar who had 3 hits including a home run.

The Rays staked Jeremy Hellickson to a 4-o lead plating 2 runs in the 1st inning and single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. In the first inning James Loney [12] scorched line drive plating both Matt Joyce who had singled and Kelly Johnson [13] who had walked to put the Rays  up 2-0.  They extended their lead on an opposite field 2-out RBI single by Evan Longoria that scored Matt Joyce who had walked earlier in the inning. In the 4th innings Sam Fuld [14] led off with a triple and came around to score on a single by Yunel Escobar that gave the Rays their 4-0 lead .

In each of their first four runs the Rays had a fortunate break go their way. James Loney’s line drive to center glanced off the glove of Michael Bourn [15], Evan Longoria appeared to be out on a third strike that umpire Bill Welke called a ball to extend the at-bat, and Sam Fuld’s triple was re-directed off the heel of the ball boy turning a double into a triple. It was one of those days for the Indians and after being on the other side of so many of these types of innings it was nice to be the recipient of a couple.

The Indians came back to cut the Rays lead to 3-0 in their half of the 4th inning but an argument can be made that Hellickson should have gotten out of the inning unscathed. With 2-outs and 2-on Yan Gomes [16] sent a high drive to right center that landed on the warning track and scored Mark Reynolds [17] from 2nd and Mike Aviles [18] followed with a single to score Carlos Santana [19] and Gomes.

The Rays answered the Indians 3 runs with 1 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th.  In the top of the 5th Kelly Johnson singled and moved to second on a soft ground out by Evan Longoria.  Johnson then stole 3rd base and came in to score when Yan Gomes throw sailed into left field. Jose Lobaton opened the 6th inning for the Rays by drawing a 4-pitch walk and Yunel Escobar followed with a 1st pitch 414 foot homer to straight away center to give the Rays a 7-3 lead.

The Rays continued to pound the Indians bullpen adding 4 runs in the 8th inning. Jose Lobaton led off with a single and advanced to 3rd on a long single by Yunel Escobar. Jose Lobaton was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball to 1b Nick Swisher [20] but the Rays didn’t allow the base running error to slow them down. Ryan Roberts [21], pinch hitting for Matt Joyce, blooped a single to right that scored Yunel Escobar and moved Ben Zobrist [22] to 3rd. Zobrist came in to score on a Kelly Johnson sacrifice fly. Rich Hill [23] was replaced by Matt Langwell [24] making his major league debut and Longoria drove  his 2nd pitch the opposite way for a 2-run homer.

After an off day in Detroit the Rays will begin a 3-game series on Tuesday night. The pitching match ups and start times are as follows.

Matt Moore [25] (8-0, 2.18 ERA) vs Anibal Sanchez [26] (5-5, 2.79 ERA) on Tuesday evening at 7:08.

Alex Cobb [27] (6-2, 2.66 ERA) vs Doug Fister [28] (5-2, 3.28) on Wednesday evening at 7:08.

Roberto Hernandez [29] (3-5, 4.87) vs Max Scherzer [30] (7-0, 3.42) Thursday afternoon at 1:08.
