Rays Reportedly Re-Sign Juan Carlos Oviedo

Marlins_Juan_Carlos_Oviedo_1Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times  reports that the Rays have re-signed reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo to a contract which should be announced along with Jose Molina‘s deal next week. Contract terms have not been announced.

Last winter the Rays signed Oviedo (the former Leo Nunez) to a minor league contract with a club option for 2014 valued at $2M. Rather than pick up the 2014 option the Rays elected to pay the $30K buyout instead.

Oviedo had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on September 6, 2012 and the Rays had hoped that he’d rehab with them in 2013 and be available down the stretch but he was never able to return to action.

In seven big league seasons Oviedo has appeared in 317 games (357 innings pitched) and has posted a 4.34 ERA/4.30 FIP with 7.3 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9.  He was the Miami Marlins closer in 2010, 2011, and 2012 compiling 26, 30, and 36 saves respectively.
