Rays Reportedly Close To Re-Signing Catcher Jose Molina

This afternoon Buster Olney tweeted that the Rays were close to a 2-year deal with free agent catcher Jose Molina [1].

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times [3] reports:

Molina had interest from other teams, but liked the situation playing with the Rays and for Joe Maddon [4], and the chance to work with the talented pitchers on the staff. With an unimpressive pool of talent on the second-tier free-agent market, the Rays obviously felt more comfortable sticking with Molina. A trade for Cincinnati’s Ryan Hanigan [5] also seemed to be a possibility.

Rays_Jose_Molina_2013 [6]Molina hit .233 (66 for 283) caught 99 games (87 starts) for the Rays and his value is his ability to handle young pitchers and especially his pitch framing skills. It is expected that he will share time with Jose Lobaton [7] who is expected to see the majority of playing time.

If you aren’t familiar with “Pitch Framing” skills Jeff Sullivan (@based_ball [8]) does a spectacular job (great video!) covering it for Baseball Nation titled The Infuriating Jose Molina [9].
