Rays Reportedly Acquire Logan Forsythe From Padres

Late last night Chris Cotillo (MLBDailyDish ) reported that a four player trade between the San Diego Padres and the Tampa Bay Rays was in the process of being finalized and later Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter ) reported it will be a total of five players.
With the trade the Padres add the left handed reliever they’ve been seeking since the end of the 2013 season.
During the announcement of the signing of Joaquin Benoit GM Josh Byrnes (LINK ) said that Rule 5 draftee Patrick Schuster and Cory Luebke (returning from elbow surgery) would be given an opportunity to land a spot as one of the left handers in the pen.
He also said that the search would continue for a more established left handed arm. The acquisition would most likely come via a trade or a buy low free agent signing. “There’s not much left out there.” said Byrnes. “I don’t see us spending a whole lot on it financially. I think we’re either going to trade for or find a free agent that we may be able to buy low.”
Torres spent most of his minor league career as a starting pitcher and often struggled with his command. In 2012 his career took a major step backward and he was sent all the way down to the Gulf Coast League to rework his mechanics.
As luck would have it the Rays held a rare 4th year player option on Torres and were able to send him to the minor leagues to begin the 2013 season. When he was finally called up for an extended period of time he overcame all the adversity and began to excel in his relief role . With each outing the idea of returning him to the minors to resume his previous role as a starting pitcher faded.
Through his first 21 games Torres was dominant. He posted a 4-0 record with a microscopic 0.29 ERA. He had worked 34.1 innings striking out 42 and walking 11. and held the opposition to a .088 batting average against.
According to Elias he became the second major league pitcher in the last 50 seasons to allow fewer than 10 hits in the firs 100 AB of a season against him (9-100) joining the Red Arnoldis Chapman who had held the opposition to the same 9 for 100 to start the 2012 season.
Overall he finished the 2013 season with a record of 4-2 with a 1.71 ERA working a total of 58 innings striking out 62 and walking only 20. He held the opposition to a batting average against of just .159 (32 for 201). According to MLBTR (LINK ) he is a candidate for regression after posting a minuscule 0.897 WHIP, a low BABIP (.221), high strand rate (80.2% LOB), and low home run tally (.16 HR/9).
The Rays are getting a versatile player, much in the same ilk as Sean Rodriguez , who has appeared in games at second base (138), third base (41), shortstop (18), left field (11), and right field (7).
He hits well against left handed pitching posting a career triple slash line of .290/.363/.430 but has struggled against right handers hitting just .218/.284/.310.
Last season he struggled hitting just .214 (47 for 220) but in 2012 he was much better posting a slash line of .273/.343/.390.
One explanation for his struggles in 2013 may have been his inability to rest his right foot as he battled plantar fasciitis all season long.
The Rays control him for the next four seasons and he is not arbitration eligible until after the 2014 season.
As of now the rest of the deal is unknown and will be updated later.
