Rays Place Three Prospects On Law’s Top 100
Posted By Steve Kinsella On January 29, 2014 @ 10:18 AM In Florida News,Insider - Rays,Legacy,main feature,MLB | No Comments
The Rays minor league system ranked 23rd out of 30 clubs and three prospects are in Top 100.
“The Rays have been hurt by on-field success that gives them lower picks and limits their draft and international bonus pools, but they haven’t fared well even within those limits.”
To be eligible for the Top 100 Prospect List players had to have rookie eligibility; that means they have yet to exceed 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the majors and have not yet spent 45 days on the active roster of a major league club, excluding call-ups during the roster expansion period after Sept. 1.
Guerrieri is currently rehabbing from elbow surgery and has to serve a 50-game suspension for testing positive for marijuana. He has a power arm as evidenced by a career 96 strike outs in 119 innings while showing outstanding command in issuing just 17 walks.
“If Guerrieri can keep himself clean and get back on the field by August, he could be just a couple of years from a rotation spot, with No. 2 starter upside once he develops more feel for his change.”
Lee was off to a tremendous start for the Durham Bulls in 2013 before a traumatic knee injury (Video Here ) resulted in ACL surgery. During the Winter Development Program the Rays stated that Lee has recovered nicely and should be ready to play at the beginning of spring training. The key to his game, and his prospect ranking, is his quickness.
“He’s ranked in a holding pattern here until we see how much of his quickness remains, and for his sake and baseball’s in general — another Korean star player in MLB would only help grow the game globally — I hope his tools are all intact.”
Ciuffo was the 21st pick of the 2013 draft out of Lexington High School in South Carolina (Video Here). After signing with the Rays he reported to their Gulf Coast League Rookie League where he appeared in 43 games posting a triple slash line of .258/.396/.308. His strength is his defensive ability and raw power.
“He’s a potential above-average regular, a plus defender across the board who might hit .240-250 with 18-20 homers per season in a position at which a pulse is enough to put you above replacement level.”
