Rays Pitching Staff Nears Franchise Shutout Record
After last nights combined 7-0 shutout over the Minnesota Twins the Rays pitching staff has now recorded 15 shutouts on the season and 19 games without giving up an earned run. Their shutout total of 2013 ties their total of 2012 and ties them with the franchise record for shutouts in a season and their 19 games without allowing an earned run is already a franchise record (next highest total being 16 in 2011 and 2012).
Their 15 shutouts rank behind the Los Angeles Dodgers who have recorded 19 shutouts and the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cincinnati Reds who have 16 each.
Individually they have 3 complete game shutouts which all came in the month of July.
Three times this year the Rays have shut an opponent out in back to back games. They shut the Indians out on April 5 and 6th, the Astros on July 1st and 2nd, and the Twins on September 14 and 15th. It marks the first time in franchise history that they have had back-to-back shutouts multiple times in a season.
The Rays have never thrown three consecutive shutouts in franchise history but with an inexperienced and weary Twins lineup set to face him on Sunday afternoon their is a good opportunity for both the teams franchise record for shutouts in a season to be set and for the teams first back to back to back shutouts.
