Rays Pitchers Combine For Rare Feat

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 on Monday evening but rarely does a victory feel so awkward. The game was tenuous to watch [1] as inning after inning the Orioles offense plugged the bases [2] and always seemed just one hit away from tying the game or taking a lead.

David Price [4] started for the Rays and he did a better job of playing Houdini than Tony Curtis. He allowed 10 hits in just 5 innings but departed with the Rays on top 4-2.  Jamey Wright [5] worked a scoreless inning but allowed a base runner via the walk. Joel Peralta [6] allowed a home run which cut the lead to 4-3 in addition to 2 singles, Jake McGee [7] worked 1.1 innings and allowed 1 hit, and Fernando Rodney [8] allowed a hit and a walk in his 1 inning of work.

All totaled the Rays pitching staff allowed 15 hits and 4 walks but yet the Orioles were unable to capitalize going 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position and leaving 15 runners on base.

For the Rays it was the first time in franchise history that they had allowed an opponent 15 or more hits while holding them to 3 runs or less. They have  had 12 games where they have given up a dozen or more hits and allowed only 3 runs or less (Click for full list of games [9]). If extra inning games are included the list grows to 19 such but even in extra frames there isn’t a game greater than last nights combination (Click for full list of games [10]).

The closest to last nights 15 hits/3 run combo came back on April 16, 2009 when the Chicago White Sox had 14 hits in their 3-2 victory. In that game Jeff Niemann [11] walked the tightrope allowing 2 runs on 9 hits over 6 innings while Lance Cormier [12] allowed 1 run on 5 hits over his 2.1 innings of work.
