Rays Receive Five Players For Alex Torres and Jesse Hahn

The Tampa Bay Rays and the San Diego Padres have completed a seven player deal. The Rays send left handed pitcher Alex Torres [1] and minor league pitcher Jesse Hahn [2] to the Padres. In exchange they receive major league infielder Logan Forsythe [3] and right handed reliever Brad Boxberger [4] along with minor league right handed pitchers Matt Andriese [5] and Matt Lollis [6] and minor league second basemen Maxx Tissenbaum [7] from the Padres.

Rays_Alex_Torres_1 [8]As reported earlier (LINK) [9] Padres GM Josh Byrnes (LINK [10])  has been looking for an established left handed reliever since the end of last season and that the acquisition would most likely come via a trade or a buy low free agent signing. “There’s not much left out there.” said Byrnes. “I don’t see us spending a whole lot on it financially. I think we’re either going to trade for or find a free agent that we may be able to buy low.”

In  Alex Torres the Padres are receiving a pitcher who had a breakout season in 2013  posting record of 4-2 with a 1.71 ERA working a total of 58 innings striking out 62 and walking only 20 while holding the opposition to a batting average against of just .159 (32 for 201).  His stellar season comes with a warning as MLBTR (LINK [11])  points out that he is a candidate for regression after posting a minuscule 0.897 WHIP, a low BABIP (.221), high strand rate (80.2% LOB), and low home run tally (.16 HR/9).

Jesse Hahn is 24 years old and had a very good year split between the Gulf Coast Rays (Rookie League)l and their Class A affiliate Charlotte Stone Crabs where he went 2-1 with a 2.09 ERA (16ER/69IP) and had an impressive strikeout rate of 8.7 K/9 and a low walk rate of 2.3 BB/9.  The Rays were cautious in the innings he worked as he only worked 52 innings in 2012.

He was drafted in the sixth round by the Rays in 2010 but shortly after being drafted he required Tommy John [12] elbow surgery which he took until spring of 2012 to fully recover from. Then in spring training of his comeback year he broke his foot and did not take the mound until mid-June.

He was part of the Rays Winter Development Program held last week at Tropicana Field and spoke after a workout:

Via conference call Rays Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman said Logan Forsythe [3] is a player that Rays have been after for a few years and believes he has high upside. He also explained that he felt dealing Torres was dealing from an area of strength as the team still has Jake McGee [13] and Cesar Ramos [14] on the big league roster and Jeff Beliveau [15] and C.J. Riefenhauser [16] in Triple-A.

Boxberger is  25 and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round (#43 overall) in 2009. He was later  moved to the Padres in the Mat Latos [17] trade in 2012. In parts of two season (49.2 IP) with the Padres he as a 2.72 ERA with a strikeout rate of 10.3K/9 but has trouble commanding the powerful arm with a walk rate of 5.6 BB/9. Thus far in his career he is a reverse split reliever holding left handed batters to a triple slash line of .215/.308/.380 (93 PA) while right handed batters hit him .250/.383/.406 (121 PAs)

Matt Andriese [5] is 24 years old  and  was drafted by the Padres out of University of California in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft. He split time between the Padres Double-A affiliate San Antonio Missions and Triple-A affiliate Tuscon Padres posting a 11-7 record with a   3.27 ERA. He had a strike out rate of 7.0 K/9 and a very good walk rate of 1.9 BB/9.  He will remain a starting pitcher with the Rays. Friedman said, “He gives us two things that we value quite a bit – throw strikes and have the ability to keep the ball on the ground.”

Matt Lollis [6] is 23 years old and was selected in the 15th round out of Riverside Community College in 2009. He just transitioned to the bullpen full-time in 2013.  He split his season with 23 appearances for the Padres High Class A affiliate Lake Elisnore Storm , 32 appearances at Double A San Antonio, and three appearances with Tuscon. Overall he went 3-8 with a 4.62 ERA with a strikeout rate of 7.7 K9 and a walk rate 4.7 BB/9.  Lollis stands 6’9″ tall and believes in max effort and intimidation on the mound as he told Ben Hill of Milb.com (LINK [18]).

Maxx Tissenbaum [7] is a contact hitter who in 700 minor league plate appearances has walked 70 times and struck out just 50 times. In 2013 he posted a triple slash line of  .277/.365/.359. He was a member of the 2012 Stony Brook baseball team that upset both Miami and LSU on their way to the schools first appearance in the College World Series.
