Rays Offense Backs Moore With Dozen Runs, Defeat Astros 12-0

Welcome July! The Rays kicked off the month of July and 4-game series with the Houston Astros by matching their season high single game run total defeating the Astros 12-0 to improve to 44-39. The Astros fall to 1-5 on their current 9 game home stand and their record drops to 30-52 on the year.

[1]Matt Moore [2] (11-3, 3.65 ERA) dominated an Astros lineup that appeared over-matched throughout the game delivering 7 innings allowing just 2 hits while striking out 9 and walking 3.  He threw 101 pitches and 61 were for strikes. Cesar Ramos [3] came in to work the final 2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out 2.

The only time he was challenged was in the bottom of the 4th when he walked Jason Castro [4] to lead off the  inning and Chris Carter [5] followed with a single to put runners on the corner with nobody out. Moore responded by striking out J.D. Martinez [6] on 3 pitches and getting Matt Dominguez [7] to ground into an inning ending double play.

The Rays stranded 5 runners in the first two innings against Astros starter Dallas Keuchel [8] (4-5, 4.65 ERA) but that was about the only time they were frustrated as they banged out 17 hits and pushed across a dozen runs.

In addition to the 17 hits the Rays drew 7 walks including 2 by Wil Myers [9] who had drawn just 1 walk in his previous 55 plate appearances.

With the exception of Yunel Escobar [10] every Rays starter had a hit and Escobar reached base via two walks. Sean Rodriguez [11], Ryan Roberts [12], Jose Lobaton [13], and Sam Fuld [14] all had at least three hits with Sean Rodriguez leading the way with 4-hits.

The Rays and Astros will meet tomorrow at 8:10 p.m. David Price (1-4, 5.24 ERA) will be making his first start since May 15th. The Astros counter with left hander Erik Bedard [16] (3-3, 4.44 ERA).
