Rays Notes: Price To DL, Torres Up, Lineups Posted
Prior to the game David Price was put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained triceps and Alex Torres has been called up to replace him on the 25 man roster. It is expected that Torres will pitch in relief as the Rays pen was stretched thin after Price was removed with only 1-out recorded in the 3rd inning yesterday.
Torres last pitched ?on Sunday against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs going 6 innings allowing 6R/4ER on 7 hits while striking out 8 and walking 3 while throwing a season high 113 pitches. On the season Torres has a record of 2-2 with an ERA of 2.39. Control has always been an issue with Torres but thus far this season he ?has struck out 39 batters while only issuing 13 non-intentional walks in 37.2 innings of work.
Torres will more than likely be sent back to the Triple A Durham Bulls to make room for Jake Odorizzi to take David Price's start Monday in Toronto. Chris Archer was also a candidate to replace Price but he is making his scheduled start today for the Bulls which would make him an unlikely candidate to start on short rest Monday.
Odorizzi was acquired from the Kansas City Royals along with Wil Myers, Mike Montgomery, and Patrick Leonard in exchange for James Shields, Wade Davis, and Elliot Johnson in December 2012. While with the Royals last season he made 2 starts and went 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA.
He started for the Durham Bulls last night ?against the Rochester Red Wings ?and went 5.2 innings allowing 6R/ER on 6 hits while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 3 home runs. Overall with the Bulls he has a 4-0 record with a 3.83 ERA.
