Rays Matt Moore Looks To Go 9-0

The Rays will look to put an end to a 2-game losing streak and will turn to lefty Matt Moore (8-0, 2.29 ERA).  The Yankees counter with soft-tossing lefty Vidal Nuno (1-1, 1.13 ERA) in his 2nd big league start. With a win today the Yankees would win their first series at Tropicana Field since April 9-11, 2010.

Matt Moore will attempt to become the first left handed pitcher to join 7 right handed pitchers who have gone 9-0 or better in their first 10 starts while being used exclusively as a starter. Matt Moore has been hit better by left handed batters in his career and accordingly Joe Girardi has 5 left handed hitters in today’s lineup including Travis Hafner who normally would see a day off against a southpaw.

Vidal Nuno is making his 2nd big league start and 4th appearance overall.  He’s come a long way in a short period of time as he was a 48th round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians and released after the 2010 season. He ended up in the Independent Frontier League where the Yankees signed him. In a little over 2 years he’s made it from the low A New York Penn League to make his first big league start against the Cleveland Indians working 5 scoreless innings earning the win in a  7-0 Yankee victory.

Nuno throws soft and softer and uses a deceptive delivery to mix his speeds. He’ll attack with his curveball/changeup and Rays hitters are going to have to be patient and be willing to take him the opposite way.

Rays Lineup: Desmond Jennings (CF),  Ryan Roberts (2B), Luke Scott (DH), Evan Longoria (3b), Ben Zobrist (RF), James Loney (1b), Sean Rodriguez (LF), Jose Molina (C), Yunel Escobar (SS)

Yankees Lineup: Brett Gardner (CF), Robinson Cano (2b), Vernon Wells (LF), Travis Hafner (DH), David Adams (3B), Ichiro Suzuki (RF), Jayson Nix (SS), Lyle Overbay (1b), and Austin Romine (C)
