Baltimore – The Birds were in savage mode last night as they beat the Rays 4-2 at Camden Yard. The three game series went to Tampa Bay 2-1, which as we all know is the far bigger story here. Meanwhile, the Red Sox beat the Giants to regain first place the American League East.
This morning the Rays are just a game behind Boston and are the leaders, by percentage points. for the top AL Wild Card spot over the Oakland A’s. Those same A’s will be in Baltimore over the weekend for a three game set with the Birds at Camden Yard.
The Rays and the Yankees have a their own big three game series set to begin Friday night at the Trop. The match up will pit the hottest two teams in the division against each other.
Over the last 10 games the Rays have gone 6-4 while New York has been hot with an 8-2 record over that same span.
The pitching match ups for the Yankees series have yet to be announced past Friday night when Chris Archer,(6-5) will take the mound for the Rays, while New York will counter with Hiroki Kuroda (11-8) with a 7:10 p.m. first pitch. Rays manager Joe Maddon will make the announcement later today on his weekend rotation.
The updated AL Playoff odds from the gang at Baseball Prospectus shows the Rays series win over Baltimore, on the road keeps them with an 88.9 chance of making the postseason compared to 33.2 for Cleveland and out west, Oakland is at 67.1 to play baseball in October.
Another important stat is that the projected winner of a AL Wild Card Playoff and that goes to Rays over the A’s by 8.1 to 4.1. So a weekend of home cooking and big loud crowds at the Trop will be music to Rays ears as they continue their push to the post season.
