Rays Joel Peralta Simply Says Jonny Gomes “Owns Him”
Jonny Gomes Continues To Frustrate Joel Peralta
Entering the game Peralta had been on a roll appearing in seven straight games without allowing an earned runs (7.12IP, 3H, 9K) after struggling through most of the April and into early May.
His appearance in the game was a point of celebration as he was appearing in his 251st relief appearance as a member of the Rays breaking Dan Wheeler club record of 250.
Pierzynski led off the inning by chopping a ball to toward shortstop Yunel Escobar who charged the ball and rather than try to glove and throw out the slow of foot Red Sox catcher he elected to attempt a bare hand grab and throw. Unfortunately, he was unable to make the play and as the ball trickled into shallow left field Pierzynski legged it into second base.
In his career the former Rays outfielder has hit Joel Peralta (5 for 12, 3 home runs, double) very well. Even down in the count Gomes made Peralta pay by launching his 1-2 fastball deep into the seats in left and with that one swing the reeling Red Sox were back even with the surging Rays.
After the game he gives his thoughts on breaking Dan Wheeler‘s mark, facing Jonny Gomes, and answers whether or not he believes the Rays are playing their best baseball of the season.
