Could Rays Have Interest In Alfonso Soriano?

Given that the New York Yankees have just designated veteran slugger Alfonso Soriano for assignment, one must wonder what teams will have interest in him. One of the teams I am curious about is the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays are currently in last place in the American League East with a 40-50 record and 8.5 games back of the first place Orioles, but the team has won eight of its last ten games and appears to be on a roll.

The Rays pitching staff and offense is starting to perform more consistently, and though the team is expected to trade David Price, they could always pull back on that, just as they did this past offseason.

We’ve seen the Rays come back from bigger deficits than this, as they recovered from a nine-game deficit in the final month of the 2011 season to earn a playoff berth, and I won’t be the one to count this team out.

If the Rays continue to play well over the next couple weeks, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them try and add a player than trade away Price.

Alfonso Soriano probably wont be claimed off of waivers given his remaining $8MM salary, and though the Rays have already set a club record this season with an $81.5MM payroll, they might want to consider adding Soriano.

He might not come cheap, but if he can perform the way he did from 2012-2013 with the Cubs/Yankees (.258/.312/.494) he could be a huge boost to a Rays offense that is currently 13th in the American League in runs scored.
