Rays Highlights: Archer & Ventura Dazzle, Loney’s Late Single Lifts Rays To Victory
Chris Archer & Yordano Ventura Battle Lives Up To Hype
Last night the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Kansas City Royals by a final score of 1-0 to even their series at a game apiece.
The game featured a matchup of two of the hardest throwing young arms in baseball in Chris Archer of the Rays and Yordano Ventura of the Royals. What makes these two young guns particularly special is that they both will change speeds to avoid letting the opposition sit on their fastballs.
The pitching matchup lived up to the hype as Archer went seven scoreless and Ventura six. Archer showed his growth and maturity on the mound overcoming what appears to be a botched instant replay call on a force out in the third inning. After the call was upheld he allowed an opposite field single to Norichika Aoki to load the bases before inducing a double play ground ball off the bat of Eric Hosmer.
The game remained scoreless into the ninth inning when a 2-out wild pitch moved Wil Myers into scoring position. The errant pitch by Royals closer Greg Holland cost the Royals as James Loney singled to plate Myers and give the Rays a 1-0 lead.
Grant Balfour came in and shut the door in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
