Rays Stymied By Yovani Gallardo, Fall To Brewers 5-0

David Price’s Six Game Win Streak Comes To An End

Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays dropped their series finale to the Milwaukee Brewers getting shutout 5-0 by the Milwaukee Brewers. The loss drops the Rays record to two games under the .500 mark at 53-55 and paired with victories by Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays they fall eight and five games out of the AL East and wild card respectively.

David Price (11-8, 3.11 ERA) took the mound amid speculation that he could be making his last start as a member of the Rays.  He was not as crisp as he had been in his previous six starts as he allowed four runs the most for him since his June 20th outing against the Miami Marlins. Overall, he worked seven innings for the 13th consecutive start and he threw over 100 pitches (119) for the 19th consecutive start.

Overall he finished with a final line of seven innings four runs (three earned) on seven hits striking out six and walking two. His two walks came in the second inning and it was only the second time this season (July 6 vs Tigers) that he has issued two walks in the same inning.

David Price‘s nemesis on Wednesday afternoon was Brewers backup catcher Martin Maldonado who went 3 for 4 with four runs driven in to lead the Brewers to the win.

Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo (6-5, 3.38 ERA) held the Rays scoreless through the first seven innings allowing just four hits striking out five and walking one.  Jeremy Jeffress, Zach Duke, and Francisco Rodriguez combined to work the final two innings to complete the shutout.

The Rays have now been shutout for the 13th time this season which is the most in the American League and 2nd most in the majors behind the San Diego Padres who have been blanked 16 times.

The Rays have the day off on Thursday before welcoming in the Los Angeles Angels for a three game weekend series. The roster that take part in the morning stretch on Friday may look a lot different as the Major League non-waiver trade deadline is at 4PM eastern time Thursday afternoon.
