[1]The Boston Red Sox ended the Tampa Bay Rays 6-game winning streak by a final score of 9-2. The victory improves the Red Sox record to 23-17 while the loss drops the Rays record to 20-19. The victory went to Jon Lester [2] who improves to 6-0 (2.72 ERA) and David Price [3] took the loss to fall to 1-4 (5.24 ERA).

The big news coming out of Tropicana Field Thursday evening was that Rays ace David Price [3] had to exit the game with “left triceps soreness.” After the game manager Joe Maddon [4] said that Price had an MRI and that it revealed a triceps strain and that it doesn’t look to be too bad.  As of now Maddon believes it’s a road sign injury calling it a  “temporary inconvenience,  permanent improvement kind of thing.”

When asked if he was going to go on the disabled list or not Maddon said only if the doctors say he has to but that it was unlikely that he would make his start Monday in Toronto. If Price is unavailable the top two candidates to take his place are either Jake Odorizzi [5] or Chris Archer [6].

Odorizzi pitched against the Rochester Red Wings tonight and went 5.1 innings allowing 6R/ER on 6 hits while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 3 home runs. Overall on the season he has a 4-0 record with a 3.83 ERA.

Chris Archer [6] last pitched on May 11th going 3 innings against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs giving up 1R/1ER on 3 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3. Overall on the season he has a 4-2 record with a 3.97 ERA.

Price spoke to reporters after the game and said that he felt the tightness 4 or 5 times – all in the 3rd inning. He said about the injury “it’s just something I have to take care of, I can’t just go out there because I’m not just putting my neck on the line..this is…I’m part of this team, I want to be there in August and September and October when were playing in the playoffs.”

Back to the game recap:

David Price [3] had pitched two scoreless innings but walked Stephen Drew [7] to open the 3rd inning and he advanced to second on a single by Jacoby Ellsbury [8].  With 1-out Dustin Pedroia [9] singled in Stephen Drew [7] for the Red Sox first run and Ellsbury advanced to 3rd. With runners on the corner and 1-out David Ortiz [10] took a 95 mph Price fastball to left field to drive in Ellsbury giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

It would be the last pitch that Price threw on the evening. Overall he made 57 pitches including 34 fastballs that averaged 94.88 mph and maxed out at 96.04 mph.

Jamey Wright [11] came in and allowed a double to Mike Napoli [12] scoring Pedroia and advancing Ortiz to 3rd and then Jonny Gomes [13] drove in Ortiz with a single giving the Red Sox a 4-0 lead. Wright was able to get Will Middlebrooks [14] to fly out but he walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia [15] to load the bases for Stephen Drew [7] who launched a grand slam home run to give the Red Sox an 8-0 lead.

The Rays came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Ryan Roberts [16] singled to lead off the inning and came around to score from first on a Desmond Jennings [17] triple.  Jennings came in to score on a RBI ground out off the bat of Ben Zobrist [18].

The Red Sox lead increased to 9-2 on a solo homer by Will Middlebrooks [14] off Kyle Farnsworth [19].

The player of the game for the Rays was reliever Cesar Ramos [20] who saved the back of the Rays bullpen for tomorrows finale by delivering 3 innings of scoreless relief.

The two teams will meet tomorrow evening as Alex Cobb [21] (4-2, 3.09 ERA) will be opposed by Felix Doubront [22] (3-1, 6.40 ERA).
