Rays End Losing Streak With Walk Off Victory

Posted By Steve Kinsella On August 14, 2013 @ 11:10 PM In Florida News,Insider Main,Legacy,main feature,MLB | No Comments

The Rays ended their six game losing streak by coming back with 2-runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to earn the 5-4 victory.  The victory improves the Rays record to 67-51. Other than the relief of ending the losing streak they get an additional bonus of gaining a game on the Boston Red Sox who fell to the Toronto Blue Jays and also extend their lead in the wild card over the Baltimore Orioles who lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

For the second night in the row the Rays entered the bottom of the ninth with the same 3 hitters due up against Mariners closer Danny Farquhar [2]. Ben Zobrist [3] led the inning off with a triple off the right field railing and came in to score on a Matt Joyce [4] single up the middle. Evan Longoria [5] doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd and Wil Myers [6] was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Jason Bourgeois [7] entered the game as a pinch runner for James Loney [8] in the bottom of the 8th and now had an opportunity to lead the Rays to victory…something he hasn’t experienced as a member of the Rays. With the outfield drawn in Bourgeois punched a 0-1 cutter to right field for the walk off single.

David Price [9] wasn’t as effective as he has been in most of his starts since coming off the disabled list but still delivered 7 innings allowing 4R/ER on 5 hits striking out 7 and walking 1.

The Mariners scored a 2-out run on a Kendrys Morales [10] single to take the first inning 1-0 lead but the Rays came back to tie the game on a James Loney RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Price got the first two Mariner hitters in the top of the 5th but walked Dustin Ackley [11] and a single to Humberto Quintero [12]. Brad Miller [13] drove both Ackley and Quintero home with a triple and he came in on a Nick Franklin [14] double.

Wil Myers cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the 6th on a 2-run homer off Mariners starter Aaron Harang [15].

Jake McGee [16] held the Mariners scoreless in the 8th inning and Joel Peralta [17] (2-5, 3.04 ERA)  worked the 9th inning to pick up the victory.   Danny Farquhar (0-1, 5.17 ERA) took the loss for the Mariners.
