Rays Draft Pitcher Cameron Varga In 2nd Round
Rays Draft Cameron Varga While He Throws Fifth No-Hitter
With their second round pick (#60) overall the Tampa Bay Rays drafted right handed pitcher Cameron Varga from Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.
He was named the Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year after finishing the regular season with a record of 8-0 with an ERA of 0.00 striking out 109 and walking just four in 44 innings of work.
Varga made national news this season after striking out 33 consecutive batter breaking the former record of 22 set way back in 1973. The strikeout totals were amassed over a four combined games from May 2nd to May 23rd.
While waiting to have his name called tonight he took the mound in the Ohio Division III State Semi-Finals against Orville and threw his fifth no hitter of the year striking out 15 hitters in a 3-0 victory.

Varga often touches 93-94 mph before settling in at 89-91 in the middle innings of games. In his most recent start of the season, Varga held his velocity better, sitting 90-94. His curveball is one of the better breaking balls in the amateur ranks, with at least plus potential. Not only is it an out pitch, but he also commands it well. Varga is one of the older prospects in the class and will be 20 by the end of the 2014 minor league season because of transferring schools across countries when he was younger.
