The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Minnesota Twins on a wet soggy night at Target Field by a final score of 7-0. It was the Rays pitching staff’s 15th shutout on the season and 3rd time this season that they’ve had shutouts in back to back  games. With the victory the Rays are now tied for the lead in the American Leagues wild card.

Wild Card Standings [1]The Rays win coupled with the Texas Rangers 1-0 loss to the Oakland A’s puts the Rays in a tie for the top wild card spot in the AL.

The Cleveland Indians stayed 1.5 games behind by defeating the lifeless Chicago White Sox by a final score of 8-1.

The New York Yankees were defeated 5-1 by the Boston Red Sox and fall 3 games behind.

The Kansas City Royals remain 3.5 games back after defeating the Detroit Tigers 1-0.

The Baltimore Orioles lost to the Toronto Blue Jays and fall to 3.5 games behind the leaders.

The Game:

Matt Moore [2] started for the Rays and worked the first 3 innings but his night was ended due to a 2 hour and 4 minute rain delay.  In his 3 innings of work Moore was somewhat shaky with his command. Despite only allowing 1 hit and striking out 5 he issued 3 walks and uncorked two wild pitches.

The Rays provided him single runs in the second and third innings. Wil Myers [3] doubled to lead off the 2nd inning and moved to third on a ground out to first by James Loney [4]. After a Delmon Young [5] walk Sean Rodriguez [6] brought Myers home with a sacrifice fly. Evan Longoria [7] gave the Rays their second run on a 2-out double to score Jose Lobaton [8] from first base.

The Rays pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the 4th on a RBI single by Yunel Escobar [9] and a sacrifice fly by Jose Lobaton.

After the rain delay the Rays bullpen was called upon to work the final 6 innings. All told Joe Maddon [10] used 5 relievers (Brandon Gomes [11], Wesley Wright [12], Jamey Wright [13], Roberto Hernandez [14], and Cesar Ramos [15]) who combined to keep the Twins off the scoreboard while only allowing 3 hits striking out 5 and walking 1.

Desmond Jennings [16] doubled in 2-runs in the 6th inning and another in the 8th to give the Rays their final 3 runs.

The win was credited to Brandon Gomes (1-1, 7.20 ERA) and the Andrew Albers [17] (2-3, 3.81 ERA) took the loss.
