Rays Decline Juan Carlos Oviedo’s Option
In a somewhat surprising move the Rays declined the $2M option on reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo (the former Leo Nunez) and instead they’ll pay him a $30K buyout.
The Rays signed Oviedo, who had ligament replacement surgery in September of 2012, in January with hopes that he’d complete his rehab and be able to help their bullpen bu September and possibly take over for Fernando Rodney as the teams closer in 2014. Unfortunately, Oviedo was unable to return and one can only assume that his arm is not sound.
The Rays will have nine free agents come off their 40-man roster in Jesse Crain, Roberto Hernandez, Kelly Johnson, James Loney, Jose Molina, Fernando Rodney, Luke Scott, Jamey Wright, and Delmon Young leaving their 40 man roster at 34.
