James Shields Shuts Rays Down In Royals 6-0 Victory

James Shields

James Shields (9-4, 3.71 ERA) last appearance at Tropicana Field was one of his most impressive.  On the second to last day of the 2012 season as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays he held the Baltimore Orioles to one run (earned) on just two hits striking out 15 while walking none.  Unfortunately for him the Rays bats were silent that day and he took a 1-0 loss.

Last night bore a lot of similarities to his last time on the mound at Tropicana Field. He delivered a solid seven innings of work holding the Rays scoreless on just three hits striking out 10 and walking one.  Like last time the Rays bats were silenced and the Royals walked away with a 6-0 victory. The loss ends the Rays three game win streak and drops their record to 41-51.

Jake Odorizzi (started for the Rays and pitched well allowing just two runs (earned) over six innings of work striking out eight and walking two.

The Royals scored both their runs off Odorizzi in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Alex Gordon and a RBI ground out by Omar Infante.

The Royals extended their lead off Juan Carlos Oviedo with a pair of runs in both the eighth and ninth innings.

After Shields left the game former Rays pitcher Wade Davis worked a scoreless eighth and Scott Downs delivered a scoreless ninth.

The Rays and Royals play the middle game of their three game set this evening at 7:05 as Jeremy Hellickson makes his first start of the year against left hander Jason Vargas who is 8-3 with a 3.32 ERA.
