Will Raptors Trade Rudy Gay?
The first two months will define how things are going to go this season for the Raptors.
With a new front office in place, there’s a common line of thinking that the team may scrap 2013-14 with an eye towards the future. Just a few weeks on to the job, general manager Masai Ujiri dealed franchise staple Andrea Bargnani, acquiring future assets and financial flexibility, and Rudy Gay may not be that far behind him.
Gay was acquired last season, by former GM Bryan Colangelo, and his contract is inflated compared to his production. With him signed through 2015, his salary could hold back any effort on the Raptors part at rebuilding. If the Raptors start slow, Ujiri may pull the plug.
The only likely reason Ujiri has not moved Gay would be to see how the team performs early – especially considering their positive finish to the 2012-13 campaign – but if the team starts slow he might very well be on his way out.
