Rangers Coach Unsure About Callahan and Girardi’s Futures
There was a palpable, uncomfortable uncertainty in the Rangers’ locker room Tuesday morning in Greenburgh about the potential futures of captain Ryan Callahan and defenseman Dan Girardi, and this “distraction” – as coach Alain Vigneault called it after practice – clearly won’t dissipate until both players either are re-signed or dealt, or until the March 5, 3 p.m. trade deadline passes.
“I don’t really want to think about stuff like that,” alternate captain Marc Staal said, nervously but honestly, when asked if trading Callahan would be a huge blow to the team. “I think obviously with the trade deadline, contracts come up (in conversation), and I think as soon as we get by, the quicker the better for us in the room, and hopefully he stays. We want him and (Girardi) and everyone else around in our room. We’ve been playing great the last month (prior to the Winter Olympics).”
