Ramos Fails To Deliver Innings, Offense Fails To Deliver Runs

The Tampa Bay Rays were defeated by the Los Angeles Angels by a final score of 6-0.  Cesar Ramos [1] (1-3, 4.58 ERA) took the loss and the Rays record falls to 19-25. C.J. Wilson [2] (5-3, 3.16 ERA) picks up the win and the Angels improve to 23-19.

Cesar Ramos [1] in all probability was making his last start before the return of Alex Cobb [4] to the rotation on Thursday afternoon against the Oakland Athletics.  He at least had a chance to go out with a bang instead he bowed out with a thud.

Trouble began in the first inning allowing a lead off single to Collin Cowgill [5] and issuing a walk to Mike Trout [6]. With one-out in the inning Howie Kendrick [7] delivered an RBI single to give the Halos an early 1-o lead. C.J. Cron [8] singled to load the bases and Chris Ianetta delivered a sacrifice fly.

The Angels added two more runs off of Ramos in the second inning knocking him out of the game. With 1-out he hit Luis Jimenez [9] with a pitch and gave up a single to Collin Cowgill [5] who advanced to second on an overzealous attempt by Kevin Keirmaier to throw out Jimenez advancing to third.

With Ramos obviously not having his best stuff and right handers Mike Trout [6] and Albert Pujols [10] due up went to his bullpen and got Brandon Gomes [11] who had held right handed hitters to a .205 (9 for 44) average against and he had only allowed 4 of 15 inherited runners to score.

Mike Trout delivered a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0 and Albert Pujols [10] followed with an opposite field RBI double to push the lead to 4-0.

Ramos final line was 1.1 innings four runs (all earned) on four hits striking out one, walking one, and hitting a batter.

The Angles added another pair of runs in the third inning to push their lead to 6-0 on a 2-run HR by Grant Green [12] off Brandon Gomes [11]. It was the fifth home run allowed by Gomes on the year and fourth to a right handed batter.

Juan Carlos Oviedo [13] came in to work 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. He worked a scoreless fifth inning and retired the first batter he faced in the sixth inning to extend his streak of retiring consecutive batters to 21 but then the wheels came off. He walked Grant Green [12] who advanced to second on a wild pitch, gave up a hard single to Luis Jimenez [9], and walked Collin Cowgill to load the bases.

Josh Lueke [14] came in to relieve Oviedo and struck out Mike Trout on a 97-mph fastball and retired Albert Pujols on a groundout to end the inning. By not allowing a run to score Oviedo’s scoreless streak stands at 8.1 innings covering his last seven appearances.

The Rays offense was unable to generate anything off of Angels starter C.J. Wilson [2] who delivered his second career complete game shutout.

His first came on September 6, 2011 as a member of the Texas Rangers when he shutout the Rays 8-0. That game against the Rays was also his last complete game (BOXSCORE [15]). He only allowed five hits and struckout seven batters while only issuing two walks.

The Rays will look for a series split tomorrow as they send David Price [16] (4-3, 4.02) to the mound against the Angles Matt Shoemaker [17] (1-1, 3.86 ERA).
