PSU Interim Coach Johnson Wants Fulltime Job

Penn State interim coach Larry Johnson says he will apply for the fulltime job left open when Bill O’Brien left for the NFL’s Houston Texans.

Johnson is a holdover from the Joe Paterno era. He joined the Nittany Lions’ staff in 1996 and has been the defensive line coach since 2000.

He also interviewed for the job two years ago before O’Brien was hired as Paterno’s successor.

Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner says the search will be over in days, not weeks.

Vanderbilt’s James Franklin and Miami coach Al Golden, a former Penn State captain under Paterno, are also among the names that could be on Penn State’s short list.

Johnson says he’s been in touch with both recruits and current players, trying to keep the team together.
